Welcome& Gala Night RecapThe industry gathered at Darling Harbour in Sydney to celebrate the 2023 ACFA Industry Awards. These awards achieved unprecedented success, boasng a higher number of nominaons and a larger turnout of aendees than any previous year. The ACFA Industry Awards were established in 2019 in the same year that ACFA took on its new name, having previously been run as FIAA. As an organisaon run by industry, for industry, ACFA felt it was important to provide an opportunity to raise the prole and reputaon of all businesses in the cabinet making and furniture industry. It’s important not to understate the outstanding achievements within the furniture and cabinet making industry and these awards programs provide the opportunity for entrants to benchmark their businesses against naonal peers and competors, and celebrate the hard work of all team members on a parcular project.Becoming a nalist or winner in the ACFA Industry Awards means those companies have met stringent criteria for workmanship, design, implementaon, manufacturing and delivery of a great product.Winners and nalists are commended at the Awards Presentaon and Gala Dinner, which allows our industry colleagues to network and celebrate together and this year’s event was extra special as it coincided with ACFA’s 75 year anniversary.Entrants are featured in ACFA's newsleers, website and social media channels, with nalists promoted extensively via social media in the lead up to the Gala event and the winners provided with addional coverage aer the night. We congratulate all the nalists and winners from this year's event and look forward to welcoming you again in 2024 as we celebrate another successful ACFA Industry Awards.Dean BrakellCEOMore than 300 industry professionals gathered at Dockside, Darling Harbour in September 2023 to celebrate the ACFA 2023 Industry Awards.

CABINET MAKEROF THE YEARa specic way, then labelled accordingly, to ensure a cohesive match when installed – even around the radius corners.“It’s excing to see a designer’s face light up when they realise we can do what they want,” says Ma. “We focus on soluons – there has to be a way to make it work – and we keep the big picture in mind to ensure we understand what we are trying to create”.The main feature of the kitchen is the large island bench, with an intricate round leg at one end. Ma explains that he enjoyed the challenge of creang this element: “We’d never done a fully round, exposed piece like that before. Geng the join right was our main concern as there is nowhere to hide it and we knew it was important to make sure it looked seamless”.The size of the island bench meant its installaon needed to be carefully managed. The rear marble pieces also required addional aenon and it’s here that Ma and his team worked closely with the builder while the structure of the extension was being created. “We worked with the builder while they had the ceiling open and we were able to organise for addional beams to be installed prior to the kitchen installaon. This meant the marble pieces would be securely xed at the ceiling points with a yover piece that allowed for concealed xings,” he explains.Ma’s favourite part of the project is the island bench and not only because that was the most challenging part of the design from a cabinet maker’s perspecve. “It’s the rst thing my eye goes to and I’m really proud of the crowning of the veneer – it’s prey spectacular,” he says. “Producing it was a lot of fun. It was tricky enough to be a real challenge but it was so sasfying to see it all come together”.The ACFA judges said, “We love the eclecc use of materials that is unied by beauful detailing”.For more informaon visit northernkitchens.com.au/A soothing background of so greens and American walnut creates an incredible backdrop within this magnicent family home. Created as part of a custom home renovaon by Love Custom Homes, the kitchen takes pride of place as the heart of the home and is the centre of all family and entertaining acvies.As the cabinet maker challenged to bring this amazing design to life, it was imperave that Ma Marn and the team from Northern Kitchens & Joinery were involved right from the start. The rst meeng was with the builder, and then with the designer Meredith Clark, to talk about the project and then to go through how to build and install the kitchen in a way that was true to the vision of the homeowner. The American oak veneer was specically chosen to complement the mberwork that was featured elsewhere within the house. To create balance within the space, American oak veneer was used for the rear cabinetry but painted in a sage green polyurethane to ensure the grain eect would be visible. Ma created six colour samples for the designer to nd the perfect colour that showcased the grain by thinning the paint at dierent levels. One of the major challenges of the project was to create the benchtop in the way that was envisioned by the designer but without blowing out the budget. It took close collaboraon with the manufacturer and the designer to nd a soluon that met all requirements of the brief. The edge prole was eventually created from three 20mm layers with a full bullnose to create the nal look.Ma and the team at Northern Kitchens & Joinery thrive on this sort of challenge and have built a reputaon for working with builders and designers to problem-solve soluons. Another challenging feature was the bar back panel at the rear of the kitchen. DESIGNOF THE YEARminute adjustments to ensure that it would look spectacular from every vantage point.Nick was also highly focussed on the praccality and usability of the piece so his main goal was to hide the funconality within the beauty. “I knew I wanted it to look good but it had to also be usable,” he laughs. “I was hoping the tension within the curvature would be enough to make it rigid and the two addional curves inside the curved leg act as a support structure as well as enhance the overall design”.Nick chose American ash for its exibility and colour. “American ash was the perfect choice,” he explains. “I wanted a lighter wood as that makes beer shadows as you build up the laminaon. It catches the light in certain areas that makes it look highly visually appealing”.Working with wood is in Nick’s blood and his parents report his creave streak was evident from a very young age. His grandfather was also a furniture maker and Nick started working with him in his home workshop on the weekends from the age of 8 years. He recalls his rst woodworking project was a wooden clock, made with his grandfather, which sparked a love of the cra and culminated in a complicated roll top desk that Nick made for his Industrial Technology HSC major work. Pedulla Studios was established in 2016 in the same premises that it operates from today. Nick applied his years of experience working in a variety of factories to ensure this studio was set up in a way that’s perfect for his business. Today, Nick combines client work with lming for his YouTube channel which he uses to document his work and has been steadily climbing in popularity since it was launched. The ACFA judges were incredibly impressed with this submission and said: “A true furniture crasman! This funconal art piece epitomises and celebrates nature!”For more informaon visit pedullastudio.com.au/The Vigne Bench is made from solid American ash and is so called because the structure of the curved elements reects the way a vine grows around its trellis. Created by Nick Pedulla from Pedulla Studio this project was inspired by the work of Joseph Walsh and was the result of Nick’s inherent desire to connue to push himself, develop new techniques and progress his skills as a designer and furniture maker. The main seat structure uses a stacked laminaon technique to build a solid foundaon which is then carved into its nal shape. Starng with the idea of the project rst, Nick had an image of what he wanted to create but then had to work backwards to reverse engineer the design and manufacturing process. Nick started tesng a few dierent ideas, theorising from his experience and modifying as he went. “This process was my way of trying to gure out how to create the piece,” he explains. “It took longer to work out how to do it than to actually build it. This was the rst me I’d ever created something on this scale and it worked out beer than I could have ever expected”.Incredibly, the most challenging aspect was not the curved elements but how to join the curved elements to the bench as there are no at areas or singular angles in order to ulise support brackets. Add in a variety of compound angles within the same xing point and this became the most complicated part of the process. Nick found that trial-and-error was the only way to nd the soluon.“I had to build up secons and then chip away at it unl it was right. Which was frustrang as I prefer to calculate rst and then cut, but it was too dicult with all the angles,” he says.Another part of the challenge is the piece’s applicaon as a 3D structure – no one secon looks the same as another. Because it looks dierent from all angles, Nick needed to spend many hours making CATEGORY SPONSOR:Pedulla Studio8 92023 ACFA INDUSTRY AWARDS 2023 ACFA INDUSTRY AWARDS
