It allows students to combine paid, hands-on work with structured learning, building essential skills and experience before they even nish school. With a minimum requirement of 100 days of paid employment to be completed across Years 10 to 12, students gain meaningful insight into the trade, while employers benet from having an engaged and trainable team member. Once the student nishes school, they transition straight into the second year of a full-time apprenticeship—saving businesses time and money on recruitment and training. One of the key benets of the SBAT program is that **all training costs are covered by the NSW Government**, making it a highly cost-effective way for employers to grow their workforce. Additionally, employers may be eligible for **nancial incentives**, further reducing the cost of hiring and training.ACFA provides full support throughout the process, including regular workplace visits from qualied trainers/assessors and access to a dedicated SBAT Engagement Ofcer at the student’s school. This initiative is more than just a training opportunity—it’s a long-term workforce development strategy. ACFA AUSTRALIAN CABINET & FURNITURE ASSOCIATION AUTUMN 2025 NEWSLETTERRead our Full Media ReleaseAt ACFA, we are committed to giving our industry a strong and united voice in government discussions. Through our collaboration with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), we advocate on key issues impacting our membersCurrently, we are contributing to Fair Work’s review of the Small Business Employer denition, pushing for a clearer, more consistent approach that reduces red tape for businesses with fewer than 25 employees (currently set at fewer than 15 employees under the Fairwork Act)Additionally, we are objecting to the Fair Work Commission’s proposal to introduce a working from home term in the Clerks Award. Our view is that modern awards should not mandate work-from-home entitlements but instead provide exibility where arrangements are mutually agreed between employers and employees. It is essential that exibility does not compromise business operations, ensuring practical, workable solutions for both employers and staff.Together, we are driving positive change for our members.Industry Advisory Group:ACFA currently sits on the Furniture, Textiles, Timber, Forestry and Forest Products Industry Advisory Group in Victoria, with a similar group in NSW. These Industry Advisory Groups are designed to provide structured communication between industry stakeholders and the state’s training system. Our CEO recently attended a meeting, which is facitated by ForestWorks, allowed for discussing with the Victorian Skills Authority the key priorities for the VET sector in Victoria. Dean was able also discuss the boarder industry and VET sector with other industry associations, including Tim Lester, General Manager of the Australian Forest Contractors Association. Industry Advocacy UpdateMany of you may be aware that the Federal Government recently announced the Housing Construction Apprenticeship Incentive Program, launching on the 1st July, offering $10,000 in incentive payments to apprentices in residential construction. While ACFA welcomes this initiative, we are seeking urgent clarity on whether the MSF30322 Certicate III in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology will be included. This is crucial to ensure cabinetmaking apprentices receive the support needed to contribute to Australia’s housing targets.ACFA has also reached out to Minister Andrew Giles and Shadow Minister Sussan Ley to advocate for the cabinetmaking industry. A media release was sent to our members to inform them of this announcement and ACFA’s advocacy efforts. We are awaiting to receive conrmation from the Ministers. The proposed merger with KBDi represents a strategic step forward, bringing together the strengths and expertise of both associations to benet our industry. We anticipate the nal decision on the merger will be made by the end of May, when KBDi members will vote. This merger isn’t just about bringing two organisations together: it’s about expanding the opportunities and resources available to you, as our members. We’re also excited about the Trade Expos KBDi is hosting, with the rst already taking place in Melbourne on March 27th and the next one coming up in Sydney on May 8th. Alongside these, KBDi has scheduled a range of chapter events across the country, providing fantastic opportunities to explore the latest industry trends and connect with key industry leaders. This merger presents exciting opportunities for both associations and the industry as a whole, strengthening our collective ability to support and advocate for our members. For any further questions, please email [email protected] Government Apprentice FundKBDi Merger - Where are we at?
